In my humble opinion getting an Ironman tattoo (as in the "M Dot") is definitely out. Simply because its a company brand and that company (as all companies) is out to make money. Unless they're sponsoring your racing etc then its a no go (I don't see the point in branding yourself with a company brand).
On the other hand I've seen some "226" or "Iron Distance" related tattoo's which don't incorporate the Ironman Brand. I think that a tattoo is something that you will have to live with for the rest of your life so it should be something very personal to you. As such it really doesn't matter if no one else "gets it" (whereas obviously loads of people recogonise the "Ironman" brand).
I'm pro ink in general (just to have you know my bias) but don't think anyone should have something that permanent unless they really, really want it - whether it's in or out. (I love IM tattos though.)
I think IN - only because I love tattooing and i think that finishing an ironman should be well and truely celebrated and what better way to show it off!!!!! I plan to get one come March 2009 so if you want to wait...... see you tonight Di
I went through this same argument. Then, I decided no. And I LOVE tats. :) Ultimately, IM something that you did for you. Do you care if others know you did it?
I used to be a triathlon & training addict!!! Then I became a Coach and seemed to turn everyone else into that, while I got fat and lazy. Now I am trying to find my triathlon mojo once again so I can complete Ironman number two in 2013.
I work full time as well as Coach part time; I have 11 year old twin boys, and a very understanding and supportive husband (nicknamed "The Saint" for blogging purposes). I spend any spare time I have trying to get myself back into shape and ready to face Taupo again. Dear lord, what have I done?????

Thats my 2 cents - should be an interesting post!
IN!!!!!!
M Dot is OUT ... N Dot is IN!!! IMHO :)
I think getting a tattoo that has significant meaning to you is in. Whatever form it takes for you, or "someone" is personal.
IN!!!
In. Simply because I said so. :)
it's not something that I would do, but that doesn't necessarily make it in or out.
In if you ask me! I still like mine!
I still want one.
My husband told me I am not allowed back in the house though if I do it...so that has been a detering factor.
Go for it!
Only one "M Dot" per ironman and you have a lovely necklace.
Best you get training for 2010 if you want that tattoo.

It's in if you want it to be! I'm going to get something after Ironman, just not sure what.
I'm not sure. Something about a corporate logo on your body is a little weird, but at the same time, I'm still pushing my wife to get one!
I'm a walking redundancy. ;)
IN BABY IN!!!!!!

Don't do it!
Trifuel has a great discussion on this too. I have a m-dot tattoo, as does my husband.
